John Hartranft has 16 years professional experience directing programs and local, regional, state and national partnerships for educational institutions and community organizations. He is founder and principal of the consulting firm TopoLab Associates ( www.topolab.com ), specializing in place-based studies, documentation, and programs for education and business. His current work focuses on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool for learning at the middle and high school level. Previously, Mr. Hartranft served on the staff of Peerless Rockville Historic Preservation, Ltd., with primary responsibility for education and outreach programs, fundraising and development, and use of technology to advance the organization's mission. His project experience has focused on involving communities in exploring their history in everyday places. Mr. Hartranft has promoted local history and historic sites through educational programs, tours, course curriculum development, and collaborative alliances with businesses, local and national organizations, and government agencies. He has served on the board of directors for Montgomery Preservation, Inc., the Advisory Council for the Thomas S. Wootton High School Humanities Signature Program, and various civic organizations. Mr. Hartranft has presented at more than a dozen local, regional, national and international conferences, including the National Council on Public History/Organization of American Historians, International Reading Association, National Head Start Association, National Association for the Education of Young Children, and Kiwanis International. He has served on the faculty for educational programs of the National Building Museum, Penn State University, Montgomery College, City of Rockville, and the New York City Board of Education. He was a contributor to "Enhancing the Civic Awareness of Prospective Teachers" published in the Spring 1988 edition of Social Studies Journal. Mr. Hartranft's photographs have been published by The Wilson Quarterly, Showtime Networks, several web sites and local news periodicals. He has curated and contributed to exhibitions shown at regional arts center, schools, community centers, and public buildings. Mr. Hartranft holds a Bachelor of Science in Education/Social Studies from Penn State University and a Master of Science in Business from Johns Hopkins University. He also hold a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems from Penn State. He has served as program manager and marketing/development coordinator for Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., a national children’s literacy organization affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, where he initiated innovative training and technical assistance workshops for volunteers, educators and business professionals. As an agent for more than a dozen specialty manufacturers, he has worked with the architectural community on specifications for residential, commercial, and government buildings. |
